The Battle for Marjah

The NATO offensive against the Taliban in Afghanistan has focused on the Marjah area. The US Marines have played a central role in this effort. This slide show pictures some of those efforts during the first week of the campaign.

  • The first photo shows a Marine with Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, walking through the bazaar in Marjah, Afghanistan. Marines with Bravo Company, 1/6, set about securing the key community centers in the city in order to allow locals to return to their homes.
  • The second photo shows Marines with Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, getting pinned down by sniper fire, while out on patrol in Marjah.
  • Capt. Ryan Sparks, the commanding officer for Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, is seen calling in over a radio, while out on patrol in Marjah in the third photo.
  • The fourth photo pictures Marines with Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, scanning the horizon after taking sniper fire while manning their post near the bazaar in Marjah.
  • The fifth photo shows a Marine with Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, climbing through a gap in a mud wall, while out on patrol in Marjah.
  • In the sixth photo Gunnery Sergeant Jon C. Osborne with Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, is seen calling in over a radio after an improvised explosive device was floated down a stream and detonated near a Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicle, outside the bazaar in Marjah.
  • The seventh photo shows Marines and Afghan National Army soldiers with Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, making their way through the bazaar in Marjah.
  • The eighth photo shows a Marine with Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, looking through his scope after hearing sporadic small arms fire during a patrol in Marjah.
