The Raven in Afghanistan

This slide show features the Raven UAV which is used by the US Army and USMC to provide battalion level support in Afghanistan.  The Raven UAV is built by AeroVironment.  The vehicle can fly around six miles at altitudes of around 1000 feet.  It weighs just over four pounds.

  • The first photo shows Cpl. Tomas Kleefisch of Winsor Vermont, a military policeman assigned to Company B, 1-172nd Cavalry Squadron, 86th Infantry Brigade Combat Team (Mountain) launching the RQ-11 Raven into the twilight skis of Afghanistan, April 14. Kleefisch is using the Raven is to gather video surveillance around the compound where he and the rest of his platoon spent the night.
  • The second photo shows Cpl. Tomas Kleefisch testing the motor on a RQ-11 Raven Remote Unmanned Vehicle.
