10/12/2017: A U.S. Marine Corps F-35B Lightning II assigned to Marine Aviation Weapons and Tactics Squadron One (MAWTS-1) prepares to land after a Tactical Intercept/Air Combat Maneuvering exercise during Weapons and Tactics Instructor Course (WTI) near Yuma, Ariz., Oct. 4, 2017.

WTI is a seven-week training event hosted by MAWTS-1 cadre, which emphasizes operational integration of the six functions of Marine Air Ground Task Force.

MAWTS-1 provides standardized advanced tactical training and certification of unit instructor qualifications to support Marine Aviation Training and Readiness and assists in developing and employing aviation weapons and tactics.

USS Puller: AFSB and Alligator Dagger

10/11/2017: An AH-1 Cobra helicopter and a UH-1 Huey helicopter, both assigned to Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron (VMM) 161 (Reinforced), land on the flight deck of the expeditionary supply base ship USS Lewis B. Puller (ESB-3) in support of Alligator Dagger 2017.

Lewis B. Puller is the first afloat forward staging base (AFSB) variant of the mobile landing platform, and is optimized to support a variety of maritime missions.

Alligator Dagger is a dedicated, unilateral combat rehearsal led by Naval Amphibious Force, Task Force 51/5th Marine Expeditionary Brigade, in which combined Navy and Marine Corps units of the America Amphibious Ready Group and embarked 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) are to practice, rehearse and exercise integrated capabilities that are available to U.S. Central Command both afloat and ashore.

HMAS Choules Provides Humanitarian Relief

10/10/2017: Operation Vanuatu Assist 2017 is the Australian Defence Force for Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) contribution to the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade led support to the Government of Vanuatu in the wake of recent volcanic activity on Ambae Island.

The movement of HMAS Choules under VA17 follows a formal request by the Government of Vanuatu for Australian support in achieving the full evacuation Ambae Island’s 11,000 residents.

Preparations to deploy a RAN MRH90 Taipan helicopter to assist with potential evacuation and aid distribution tasks are underway.

The ADF’s contribution is one element of the wider Australian Government support being provided, led by Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

Exercise Aurora 2017

10/10/2017: In September 2017, Sweden hosted Exercise Aurora, its largest military exercise in nearly 25 years.

The exercise involved nearly 30 per cent of the Swedish Armed Forces, as well as troop contributions from NATO Allied and partner countries – which joined on a bilateral basis.

The goal of the exercise was to build a stronger defence and increase capability to face an attack.

As well as taking place in Stockholm and Gothenburg regions, the exercise featured air, land and sea assets on the island of Gotland and in the Stockholm archipelago.

Aurora also featured collaboration between the military and the civilian emergency services.

10/09/2017: Battle Group Poland Engineers continue the construction of the trench near at the Bemowo Piskie Training Area that will be used for upcoming exercises and future training by the battle group and Polish units, Sept. 13, 2017.

The unique, multinational battle group, comprised of U.S., U.K. and Romanian soldiers serve with the Polish 15th Mechanized Brigade as a deterrence force in northeast Poland in support of NATO’s Enhanced Forward Presence.

HMAS Adelaide in Indo-Pacific Endeavour 2017

10/09/2017: An Australian Defence Force (ADF) Joint Task Group, Indo-Pacific Endeavour 2017, has departed Sydney to participate in a series of key military exercises throughout the Indo-Pacific region.

Running from September to November, Indo-Pacific Endeavour will focus on enhancing military cooperation with some of Australia’s key regional partners including Indonesia, Japan, India, Malaysia, Singapore, the Republic of Korea, the Philippines, Brunei, Timor-Leste, Thailand, Cambodia and the Federated States of Micronesia.

The deployment, in planning for more than 12 months, is part of ongoing efforts to enhance and develop strong positive relations with regional militaries through both dialogue and practical activities.

The Joint Task Group will demonstrate the ADF’s ability to operate across the full spectrum of military operations, from high-end military capabilities such as anti-submarine warfare to humanitarian assistance and disaster relief.

HMAS Adelaide will be accompanied at various stages of the deployment by HMAS Melbourne, HMAS Darwin, HMAS Toowoomba, HMAS Parramatta, and HMAS Sirius, making it the biggest coordinated task group deployment in many decades.

Indo-Pacific Endeavour will also involve service personnel from the Australian Army and Royal Australian Air Force and include Defence civilians, ADF helicopters, and fixed wing aircraft.

Exercise Pandaroo 2017

10/06/2017: Exercise Pandaroo is a bi-lateral annual exercise held between the Australian Army and the People’s Liberation Army to enable participants to build teams to overcome adversity in various adventurous training activities.

The Exercise Pandaroo program includes obstacle training, rock climbing, field cooking and camping with all participants working together to complete the challenging activities.

This year’s exercise is being held in Kunming City, Yunnan province, China, and is the first time that Exercise Pandaroo is hosted by the People’s Liberation Army.
