EMB314: Which Gender Issue?

04/21/2011

The Political Silly Season has now entered into an AF source selection

By Ed Timperlake

04/21/2011 – One of the strangest arguments ever made about competing aircraft in a source selection was recently made in an article in The Hill.

The general vice president of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, takes the discussion on the current competition between the Super Tucano and AT-6 to a new historic level [1]. Currently, an AF selection board is weighing the relative combat capabilities of the Super Tucano and the Hawker Beechcraft AT-6. It is supposed to be an open and fair competition and the merits should decide the decision [2].

Mr Rich Michalski wants to play the American job card, when actually if the Super Tucano is selected, jobs will be added to Florida where the Super Tucano will be outfitted for combat in Afghanistan.

But, essentially with press reports saying Hawker Beech may move some production to Mexico –a jobs argument might not be they way for him  to go. “Do not hand American job opportunities to Brazil”, Rich Michalski [3]

But in the middle of his article is a very strange argument:

“Adding to the numerous reasons Hawker Beechcraft should win this USAF contract is the fact that their aircraft suits a much wider range of pilots. The AT-6 aircraft is designed to accommodate 95 percent of both male and female pilots safely, while its counterpart, the Brazilian EMB314 is designed to meet older standards that due to weight and size, drastically shrink the population of pilots, particularly female pilots, able to safely fly the aircraft.

It is actually factually incorrect on weight and size, the AT-6 needed a new engine to compete and has yet to be certified for combat. From Air Force Daily, and remember the requirement was for a “non-developmental aircraft;

“Hawker Beechcraft’s AT-6 is currently undergoing weapons certification testing at the Air Force’s Barry Goldwater Range in Arizona. Flown by members of the Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve Command Test Center staging from the nearby Gila Bend Auxiliary Field, the AT-6 began the trials with inert bomblets, 2.75mm aerial rockets, and a .50 caliber machine gun. “[We had] a few hung rockets, and with the 50-cal., the biggest thing we’ve learned is that this airplane is bounced around a bit more. But, at the end of the day, things are going well,” said test pilot Lt. Col. Keith Colmer, the project’s engineering director. The AT-6 will progress to laser-guided bombs in June, followed by Hellfire missile and laser-guided rocket testing in October at Eglin AFB, Fla., and China Lake, Calif. These trials are the second phase of a Congressionally funded evaluation. (Luke report by Teresa Walker)

To imply some how using female ergonomics arguments that a nation with a Female President is not building an attack aircraft for female pilots is amazing. The US still does not have a female President. But the old saying still works—a picture is worth a thousand words-  Picking a fight with Brazil over women is also not the way to go and case closed…-

Biological and Chemical Warfare Agent Field Detectors and Triggers

02/20/2011

A White Paper By Proengin

Proengin has developed biological and chemical warfare agents field detectors using flame spectrophotometry. The well-known and world-wide used AP2C has proven the capacity of flame spectrophotometry to be the most reliable on the field with the lowest false-alarm rate and the simplest ease of use.

  • New developments such as the AP4C chemical detector have extended the capacity of that technology to include chemical warfare agents, such as sarin or mustard gas and toxic industrial materials in a simultaneous mode. There is no limitation to the number of gases detected by the AP4C.
  • The biological detector MAB has the unique capacity of detecting and categorizing biological particles with a proven extremely low false-alarm rate and the unique capacity to discriminate dangerous or suspicious biological particles such as anthrax spores from natural background.

The AP4C

AP4C – NEW EXTENDED-RANGE HANDHELD CHEMICAL DETECTOR
The AP4C handheld chemical detector has extended the range of chemicals that can be detected by Proengin chemical detectors. All dangerous compounds containing sulphur, phosphorus, arsenic, and / or chemical liaisons can be detected simultaneously. Of course, as for the AP2C, the AP4C has the capacity to work in very severe environmental conditions and the measurements are unaffected by high humidity levels or by the presence of other organic chemical compounds such as paint. Moreover the AP4C can run in highly explosive areas.

The AP4C technology allows the simultaneous detection of an unlimited number of gases and the identification of the chemical elements that constitute these chemicals. It is therefore possible to detect impure agents or chemicals manufactured by terrorists that would not fit into traditional libraries of other detectors.

Moreover, the AP4C will detect new agents that will be developed in the future without needing an upgrade.

The response time is among the shortest on the market, but what makes the AP4C unique is the recovery time after a positive detection. Where other detectors may take long minutes or hours after a positive detection or pollution by chemicals, AP4C will be ready in seconds, whatever the level of contamination.
The AP4C is therefore the chemical detector that has the highest level of availability of the field. Test reports of independent laboratories are available on request.

THE MAB – A NEW GENERATION OF BIOLOGICAL FIELD DETECTOR
Complexity, false alarms and high power consumption are the main reasons why it is difficult to deploy biological detectors on a battlefield. The MAB biological detector has circumvented all those problems by using the same technology as the AP4C.

Highly-ruggedized, very simple to use on the field and with extremely-low power consumption (15W), the MAB also has unique features in terms of biological detection. No other field detector is able to detect tiny biological particles, to categorize them by chemical composition, to discriminate background particles from suspicious particles, and even to differentiate between those suspicious particles. All this will run the same way in a cloud of smoke or in an atmosphere polluted by high-levels of diesel exhaust. Test reports of independent laboratories clearly show the superiority of the MAB.

Nuclear And Radiological Threats Detection Solutions

02/14/2011

From Early Warning To Identification

A White Paper By Mirion Technologies

Since the second half of the XXth century, the nuclear threat has been – and still remains – one of the major threat in terms of  weapons of mass destruction which armed forces have been prepared to face. More recently, new radiological threats have occurred, such as technological hazards, dirty bombs, terrorism scenarios, or illicit trafficking of radioactive materials, covering a wide range of situations beyond  military contingencies alone. Prevention and fighting against such risks have stressed the need for new functional and technical requirements and the necessity to get new detection devices better suited for applications for Defense, Homeland Security or Hazmat .

Mirion Technologies, based on its long experience in nuclear instrumentation, has taken into account this technological trend by proposing a new range of innovative and performing solutions.

Credit: Mirion Technologies, 2011

This White Paper focuses on the following five nuclear detection equipment:

1. SOR-R/T : ambient/LLR and tactical electronic dosimeter (see photo 2 and click here for detailed information)
2. MULTIRAD-LLR : radiation meter (see photo 3 and click here for detailed information)
3. HDS-100G/GN  : handheld search and indentification device (see photo 4 and click here for detailed information)
4. SPIR-IDENT : carborne and airborne spectrometry (see photo 5 and click here for detailed information)
5. RADIAC SYSTEM : ship-based detection and warning device (see photo 6 and click here for detailed information)

Equipment for nuclear detection or for radiological detection are similar, but key differences nevertheless exist depending on the nature of the threat:

  • when facing a nuclear detection situation, equipment are featuring high measurement range, are rugged and hardened with specific protections (as against TREE or EMP effects) ;
  • to counter radiological risks, equipment are featuring a capability to detect and quantify radiation (X and gamma) down to low levels and surface contamination as well (alpha and beta) ;
  • to fight terrorism and illicit trafficking of nuclear materials, equipment feature very high sensitivity and capability to detect unattended sources and discriminate dangerous nuclides from those considered as natural or medical isotopes.

All these detection devices are part of MIRION Technologies’s catalogue and can be proposed either as fix-based warning detectors, as pocket or handle equipment, or as mobile units.   MIRION’s new range of detectors, from radiation portals to pocket devices, is now taking benefits of gamma spectrometry. This technology features accurate identification of isotopes, “innocent alarms” discrimination, and resolution of masking scenarios.  MIRION Technologies’ instruments are therefore providing solutions for a faster and more reliable decision-making process, allowing better risk assessment in field conditions.
