The Brazilian Defense Sector

03/11/2012

The Super Tucano “decision” by the USAF has highlighted yet another attempt by Embraer to enter the US defense market.  But not as evident to inside the beltway commenters is the evolution of the combat fighter market.  India has downselected a French aircraft, and the Brazilians will soon choose their combat aircraft.  The handling of the Super Tucano “decision” virtually guarantees the rejection of the Boeing offering.  This means that the Indian and Brazilian competitions will reshape along with Chinese and Russian aircraft the overall combat aircraft marketplace.

The 6th largest economy in the world is in the throes of change.  With access to significant energy resources, a globally competitive aerospace sector, the Brazilian defense market will be an increasingly significant launch point into the global marketspace.

For a look at the evolving Brazilian marketspace and its global significance, ICS research has crafted a report looking at the current situation and the future.

Brazil has large reserves of many natural resources and has recently discovered substantial oil reserves. The country’s defense procurements are largely focused on the protection of such resources, including the Amazon system from illegal mining, deforestation and drug trafficking. The defense ministry focuses on providing its domestic industry with technology procured from foreign OEMs (original equipment manufacturers). The technology procured has assisted the development of the domestic aeronautical sector and continues to provide the Brazilian defense forces with attack helicopters, light attack aircrafts and air cargo transport systems.

The country imports technology such as this in order provide domestic defense firms with equipment to integrate into existing systems. In the forecast period, total Brazilian defense expenditure is estimated to grow at a CAGR of 8.13%. The country is forecast to spend 1.8% of its GDP (gross domestic product) on the defense sector during the forecast period, with an average per capita defense expenditure of US$204.2, a figure in accordance with its commitment towards the protection of civilians and natural resources.
