Cargo theft in Northern Europe will continue to be a major problem in the short to medium term, despite the proliferation of groups and intelligence agencies working on security awareness and procedures.
The theft of cargo will likely remain directed at the road haulage industry, although organized criminal groups will continue to target warehouses and port facilities. Theft of cargo by owners and crew may be restricted to an opportunistic basis or, as has been reported in the UK, as part of a wider corrupt circle.
Notwithstanding the deterrents and security procedures adopted throughout the region, cargo theft will continue to be a major problem for the shipping industry, and it will continue to drive up insurance costs.
