Testing Unmanned Systems at Sea

U.S. Marines and personnel from Maritime Tactical Systems test the Mantis T-12 Surface Variant, an unmanned surface vessel, in preparation for Valiant Shield Sept. 7, 2018. 

Valiant Shield is a biennial, U.S. only, field training exercise (FTX) with a focus on integration of joint training among U.S. forces in relation to current operational plans. 

This training enables real-world proficiency in sustaining joint forces through detecting, locating, tracking and engaging units at sea, in the air, on land, and in cyberspace in response to a range of mission areas.

Kakadu 2018

Held biennially, Exercise Kakadu is a joint exercise hosted by the Royal Australian Navy and supported by the Royal Australian Air Force. 

23 ships, 21 aircraft, a submarine and more than 3000 personnel from 27 nations are participating in a range of activities both ashore in Darwin and at sea. 

The aim of Exercise Kakadu is to generate active and effective security and humanitarian partnerships, with all nations emerging from the coming weeks more capable, united and focused on safeguarding the region.

Queen Elizabeth Carrier and F-35 Flight Tests

An F-35B Lightning II fighter jet takes off from the Royal navy aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth (R08). 

The F-35B Lightning IIs aboard Elizabeth lay the foundation for the next 50 years of fixed wing aviation in support of the United Kingdom’s carrier strike capability.

The slideshow highlights activity onboard the ship during the first landings.

The Perspective of Australian Defence Minister Pyne

Minister for Defence, the Hon Christopher Pyne MP, travelled to the Middle East on 26-27 September where he spent time with Australian troops, and met key leaders in Afghanistan and the United Arab Emirates. Minister Pyne was accompanied by the Chief of the Defence Force, General Angus Campbell, AO, DSC. 

During the visit to Kabul, where Minister Pyne stayed overnight, he thanked ADF personnel deployed on Operation HIGHROAD, Australia’s contribution to NATO’s Resolute Support mission in Afghanistan. 

Minister Pyne also visited the ADF Task Group at Hamid Karzai International Airport, Headquarters Resolute Support, and the Marshal Fahim National Defense University where approximately 300 ADF and civilian personnel support the development of the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces through the current train, advise and assist mission. 

During his visit to Afghanistan, Minister Pyne met Lieutenant General Tariq Shah Bahrami, the Afghan Minister for Defence, as well as the Commander of the NATO-led Resolute Support mission, General Scott Miller from the US.

78th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain: RAAF Remembers

The Australian Defence Force together with the Royal Australian Air Force Association commemorated the service and sacrifice of those Australians and members of Allied Forces who took part in the Battle of Brittain.

A ceremony was held in Hobart to mark the 78th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain on 15 September 2018.

In the summer and autumn of 1940 the Royal Air Force (RAF) fought a prolonged battle in defence of Britain against an experienced and numerically superior German Luftwaffe.

This air campaign, known as the Battle of Britain, officially lasted from 10 July to 31 October 1940.

Of the total of 537 RAF Fighter Command pilots who died at least ten were Australian. Another four who were enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force also died.

Supporting and Sustaining ADF Operations in the Middle East Region

About 500 ADF personnel are deployed on Operation Accordion, which comprises Headquarters Joint Task Force 633, a Theatre Communications Group, a Force Support Element, an Expeditionary Airbase Operations Unit, an Air Mobility Task Group, a Joint Movements Coordination Centre and the Australian Defence Force Investigative Service. 

Operation Accordion sustains and supports Australian Defence Force (ADF) operations in the Middle East region (MER), enabling contingency operations and enhancing regional relationships. 

The MER remains strategically important to Australia’s economic and trade interests and it is in Australia’s national interest to contribute to a secure and stable MER. 

Rear Admiral Jaimie Hatcher, AM, RAN, is the current Commander Joint Task Force 633 and exercises National Command of ADF personnel supporting Operations ACCORDION, HIGHROAD, MANITOU AND OKRA.
