NATO and Trident Juncture 2018

During Trident Juncture 18, around 50,000 personnel from 31 NATO Allies and partner countries are testing their ability to operate together to defend our populations and territories and deter potential adversaries in NATO’s biggest exercise in recent years.

Held in Norway, the exercise began on 25 October and concluded on 7 November, 2018.

Exercise Bersama Lima 2018

Defence Personnel from Singapore, Malaysia, United Kingdom, New Zealand and Australia participated in Exercise Bersama Lima 2018.

The personnel formed part of the air planning component which contributed to the Five Power Defence Arrangements combined joint exercise.

Bersama Lima 2018 was staged in Malaysia and Singapore from 1 – 19 October 2018 and included air, land and maritime training activities which aimed at enhancing interoperability of member nations.

The multi-lateral exercise directly contributes to the security and stability of the region and included approximately 800 Australian Defence Force personnel.

RAAF Cadets

The Hon Darren Chester MP, Minister for Veterans’ Affairs, visited Australian Air Force Cadets (AAFC) at RAAF Base East Sale during the Cadets General Services Training Camp on 22 January 2019.

The camp provided an opportunity for cadets to experience life on an RAAF base.

Cadets visited on base units to understand the opportunities available to them from Air Force and the aviation industry, which supports military operations at the base.

Intrepid Sentinel 2019

The aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) sails in formation with the Royal Australian Navy frigate HMAS Ballarat (FFH 155), the guided-missile destroyer USS Spruance (DDG 111), France’s Marine Nationale air defense destroyer FS Cassard (D 614) and the guided-missile cruiser USS Mobile Bay (CG 53) in the Arabian Gulf, Jan. 16, 2019, during exercise Intrepid Sentinel. 

Intrepid Sentinel brings together the John C. Stennis Strike Group, France’s Marine Nationale, United Kingdom’s Royal Navy and the Royal Australian Navy for a multinational exercise designed to enhance war fighting readiness and interoperability between allies and partners. 

The John C. Stennis Strike Group is deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations in support of naval operations to ensure maritime stability and security in the Central Region, connecting the Mediterranean and the Pacific through the western Indian Ocean and three strategic choke points.

Indo-Pacific Endeavour Jt Task Force

A Joint Task Force consisting of four ships, maritime patrol aircraft and more than 1,000 personnel from the Australian Defence Force are deployed on Indo-Pacific Endeavour 2019, a series of key engagement activities with Australia’s regional neighbours. 

Running from March to May, Indo-Pacific Endeavour 2019 is geared towards enhancing interoperability with Australia’s key regional partners, including Sri Lanka, India, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore and Indonesia. In the third iteration of the activity, Indo-Pacific Endeavour 2019 is a key part of Australia’s ongoing efforts to re-affirm positive relationships with other militaries through joint practical activities. 

HMAS Canberra, a Canberra-Class Landing Helicopter Dock, is the flagship of the joint taskforce, able to project embarked personnel, vehicles and aircraft ashore, while providing an effective hub for control of a variety of military tasks. 

Canberra is joined in the Joint Task Force by HMA Ships Success, Newcastle and Parramatta, and embarked MH-60R maritime combat helicopters and MRH-90 maritime support helicopters.

A Royal Australian Air Force P8-A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft will join the Joint Task Force at several key regional visits.

 Indo-Pacific Endeavour 2019 also involves personnel from the Australian Army’s 2RAR and 3RAR, the Australian Army Band, the Royal Australian Air Force and Defence Civilians.
