UK Update on Air Strikes in Iraq: February 9, 2015

02/11/2015

2015-02-11 According to a story on the UK MoD website:

Royal Air Force (RAF) aircraft operating in support of the Iraqi government have conducted further successful attacks on ISIL terrorists.

On the morning of Friday 6 February, an RAF Tornado GR4 patrol worked closely with a coalition surveillance platform to provide overwatch for Kurdish peshmerga, who were engaged in close combat with ISIL – also known as Da’ish – terrorists near Mosul.

When an ISIL mortar position opened fire on the pehsmerga, the GR4s were able to respond with a Brimstone missile which scored a direct hit.

Early on Saturday morning, another Tornado pair patrolled western Iraq, near Al Qa’im, close to the Syrian border.

Two heavily armed ISIL trucks were identified and attacked with Brimstone missiles.

The GR4s also located an ISIL armoured personnel carrier and conducted a further Brimstone attack; initial analysis indicates that all three vehicles were destroyed.

An armed reconnaissance patrol by a Reaper on Monday morning over western Iraq spotted a checkpoint manned by ISIL, denying the local population any freedom of movement.

Having checked the area for any risk to civilians, the Reaper’s crew attacked the checkpoint with a Hellfire missile.

Previous air strikes

2 February: Early on Monday, Tornado GR4s provided close air support to Iraqi army operations approximately 70 kilometres north west of Baghdad, and dropped 2 Paveway IVs on ISIL positions engaged in a firefight with the Iraqi troops.

4 February: In the afternoon, a pair of RAF Tornado GR4s conducted an armed reconnaissance patrol to assist the Iraqi armed forces in their offensive operations against ISIL around Bayji. Two ISIL armoured vehicles were identified in a building and were attacked with 2 Paveway IV precision guided bombs, scoring direct hits.

Military support is just one part of the UK government’s contribution to the global coalition strategy to defeat ISIL – the UK government also taking action to counter the terrorist network’s finances, are restricting the flow of foreign fighters and have provided vital humanitarian relief to help those affected by ISIL’s brutality.

The RAF contribution includes Reaper remotely piloted aircraft, which, like the Tornados, provide reconnaissance and close air support to the Iraqi ground forces; a Voyager air-to-air refuelling tanker; a Sentry airborne surveillance and command aircraft; and air transport aircraft as necessary. British military training teams continue to teach infantry and first aid skills to the Kurdish peshmerga, and liaison teams are embedded within Iraqi and coalition headquarters.

Having previously provided military equipment to the Iraqi forces, Britain plans to gift improvised explosive device (IED) detectors to help the Iraqi and Kurdish soldiers protect themselves against the numerous improvised explosive devices on which ISIL are increasingly relying as they are forced back by successful offensives. In the Gulf, the Royal Navy’s Type 45 destroyer HMS Dauntless is operating in direct support of the US Navy’s aircraft carrier, USS Carl Vinson, which provides a significant part of the coalition’s air effort.

Details of previous airstrikes can be found here.

Deployment of Australian Defense Forces to Assist in Fighting Fires in Western Australia

02/10/2015

2015-02-10 The Australian Defence Force (ADF) is assisting residents and fire fighting efforts in Western Australia.

The Australian Army’s 13th Brigade has established temporary accommodation for fire fighters and potential evacuees from areas threatened by the fires currently burning in the state’s south west.

A convoy of 10 trucks carrying around 40 soldiers and camp stores travelled to Manjimup today where 13th Brigade established a temporary camp with tents, camp stretchers, tables, chairs and lighting to support up to 200 people. The 13th Brigade has sufficient camp stores and is ready to establish an additional 200-bed camp at a second location if required.

While the Army was establishing accommodation with some help from their Navy colleagues, a Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) C-17A Globemaster delivered around 40 tons of chemical fire retardant from RAAF Base Richmond near Sydney to RAAF Base Pearce in Western Australia where the Air Force is providing parking, fuel and water support to civilian fire fighting aircraft.

The ADF support in Western Australia is provided through the Defence Assistance to the Civil Community program, which allows States or Territories to make a request through the Commonwealth for ADF assistance in response to natural disasters or emergencies.

Western Australia fire quadruples to 80,000 hectares as Abbott offers aid

The prime minister, Tony Abbott, has promised federal assistance to help communities in Western Australia’s south-west battling the biggest fire in the state’s recent history.

The 80,000-hectare fire has quadrupled in size since Tuesday and stretches from the coast to the South Western Highway in a band south of the town of Northcliffe.

Firefighters were taking advantage of cooler conditions on Thursday morning to strengthen containment lines around the fire to protect Northcliffe, 350km south of Perth, ahead of a predicted south-westerly wind change on Thursday afternoon. Northcliffe has been on emergency alert for several days after the fire, which has a perimeter of 220km, cut off two of its four access roads.

Manjimup shire president Wade de Campo said he received a call from the prime minister on Wednesday night offering his thoughts for those fighting the fire. De Campo said he was “humbled” to get the call, particularly given leadership speculation in Canberra this week.

“He does have quite a lot on his plate,” de Campo said. “He offered his support to people in the community and offered federal assistance.”

WA is facing one of its worst ever bushfire seasons, with about 3,000 fires reported since 1 January. WA police announced on Thursday that 539 of those were lit deliberately. So far 34 people, including 30 boys under the age of 17, have been charged with arson.

The first offering of federal assistance took the form of a 300-tent emergency camp, which will be built by the army on Thursday.

The tents are being set up on both the Manjimup football oval and the hockey ground, and will be used to house volunteer firefighters.

The French Air Force Conducts Joint Experiments with Rafale and the A400M

2015-02-10  As the first Air Force deploying the A400M, the French Air Force (FAF) is working the new asset into its concept of operations.

The FAF integrates its air lifters close into the battlespace when it deploys the joint force.

And the FAF plans to do so with the Atlas, and is shaping its approach by doing joint experiments.

The most recent one was performed at the Mont-de-Marsan Air Base, which provides an excellent range of operation to test concepts of operations.

The base has the various air assets, C2 and ground defense assets for a combined operation.

The FAF combined Rafales with Mirage 2000s and the Atlas in a combined operation to test ways to best use the A400M in such an operation.

They were testing what the French refer to as COMAO operations or Composite Air Operations where different types of aircraft support a common tactical objective.

According to the FAF, the objectives of the experiment were met, namely the A400M supporting a tactical insertion mission and the tactical combat aircraft becoming more familiar with the potential contribution of the A400M to such a mission.

As noted in an earlier piece, the FAF is looking to the enhancements of the self-defense of the Atlas as a key part of the way ahead.

The French experience that the FAF has been preparing for a very different type of airlifter than those, which they have previously flown earlier.

And as such, they have built from the ground up a different approach to receive the aircraft, and to standup the initial squadron or to shape the way ahead with the aircraft in terms of concepts of operations as well as maintainability of the fleet.

At the heart of the perceived differences associated with the aircraft, ranging from digital systems, to a new cockpit, to new composite materials to maintain.

Also important is to prepare for the shift from the initial logistical operations to what the French refer to as tactical operations.

What is highlighted by the logistical versus tactual operational distinction is the clear understanding that the A400M is not simply a bus transporting personnel and equipment.

It is a key element in the evolving role of airlift, which is to insert and support force within the battlespace.

As we noted earlier:

Air lifters have moved from being buses or trucks carrying materials and troops from point A to point B to becoming key elements of a networked battlespace.

And with the revolution in airdropping, the entire approach to support of forces, both dispersed and on the go, has changed entirely.

The MEST was established to prepare for the arrival of the A400M.

It is clear from the interview that the FAF was preparing for a different type of airlifter than in the past and saw the need to put together a “dream team” of players with different operational backgrounds, in order to ensure that past understandings of air lift would not rubber stamp the approach to the new aircraft.

According to Lt. Col. Creuset, the “dream team” included a variety of personnel from varied backgrounds, including Transall and Hercules pilots, CASA pilots, pilots experienced with Airbus commercial aircraft, and a Rafale pilot who was familiar with the kind of connectivity with which the Rafale operates.

“We are not preparing for a Transall Plus…..”

After having put the aircraft into operation, a key effort for the FAF is to shape its tactical capabilities.

Here several key capabilities will be introduced in the period ahead and are the major focus of attention to Lt. Col. Creuset in the period ahead.  Among these capabilities are the tanking of and the tanking by the A400Ms; the introduction of advanced self-protection systems, the introduction of MEDEVAC capabilities, etc.

Nordic-Baltic Defense Chiefs Meet as Direct Defense Returns to Europe

2015-02-10 The annual Nordic-Baltic Chief of defence meeting was conducted in Norway 29th and 30th January this year.

The purpose of this annual meeting is to discuss regional challenges and to identify common opportunities.

Topics beeing discussed are military developments concerning equipment, training, exercises and operations. Among this years topics discussions have focused on Nordic-Baltic capacity package, cyber defence and improved surveillance.

The annual Nordic-Baltic meeting is a regional cooperation mechanism on military affairs.

This functioning and constructive Nordic-Baltic defence cooperation has been ongoing since the BALTSEA (Baltic Security Assistance Forum) was established in 1997.

And a Lithuanian perspective on the meeting:

On 29-30 January, Chief of Defence of Lithuania Major General Jonas Vytautas Žukas is attending the annual Nordic-Baltic Chiefs of Defence meeting in Kongsvinger, Norway, Lithuania’s Armed Forces said.

The Nordic-Baltic chiefs of defence will be discussing security and defence situation in the region, implementation of the NATO Readiness Action Plan, future combined military exercises, perspectives of cooperation in cyber defence, air space surveillance, capacity building, and other areas.

Chiefs of Defence meet in Nordic-Baltic format once per year in a different country. Last year the meeting took place in Latvia, Malpils.

Lithuania launched defence cooperation with Nordic countries in 1994 by signing the first military cooperation agreement with Denmark which was already a NATO ally at that time.

When the Lithuanian Armed Forces were re-established, Scandinavian countries assisted Lithuania in modernising weaponry and training soldiers and military units, a considerable number of Lithuanian military graduated from various long-term qualification improvement courses in Scandinavian countries, the Iron Wolf Brigade has been assigned to the Danish Division and taking part in joint training events since 2006.

The Nordic countries are also supporting various trilateral Baltic military cooperation projects. Norway and Denmark deployed capabilities to the NATO Baltic Air Policing Mission, roughly 40 Lithuanian soldiers are on standby with the Swedish-led European Union Nordic Battle Group (NBG) this year.

And this year Finland joined the meeting.

The Commander of the Finnish Defence Forces, General Lindberg, will take part in the meeting of Nordic and Baltic chiefs of defence in Oslo, Norway, on 29 January 2015.

The meeting is held annually with the chairmanship rotating between participating nations. The agenda is put together collectively by all participating nations.

In addition to the commander of the Finnish Defence Forces, Finland will be represented by the Defence Command Chief of Planning, Brigadier General Eero Pyötsiä, the head of Defence Command Finland’s NORDEFCO Office, Lieutenant Colonel Timo Ristimäki, and General Lindberg’s ADC, Lieutenant Colonel Teemu Nurmela.

And here is a perspective on the Swedish contribution as seen from Estonia in an article published on January 21, 2015:

On Tuesday, the Speaker of the Estonian Riigikogu Eiki Nestor met with the Speaker of the Swedish parliament Riksdag Urban Ahlin, who is on an official visit to Estonia, Riigikogu press department reports LETA.

Regional cooperation between the countries in the Nordic-Baltic format (NB8), security cooperation issues and activities with the EU Eastern Partnership countries were discussed at the meeting.

“The growth of military aggressiveness in the East and in the South, and the security situation that has changed by today force to develop defence cooperation between democratic states in bilateral, regional and also NATO framework more intensively than before,” Eiki Nestor said in conclusion of the meeting.

Nestor and Ahlin agreed that parliamentary cooperation and joint activities in the NB8 framework have been successful, and focusing on Eastern Partnership is important and consistent both in Estonia and in Sweden. Estonia highly values the development of defence cooperation between Sweden and NATO. In 2015 Sweden holds the presidency of the Nordic Defence Cooperation (NORDEFCO).

Swedish economic and defence policy, Estonian education system and the common European currency were also spoken about at the meeting.

The Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Riigikogu Enn Eesmaa and the Chairman of the Estonia-Sweden Parliamentary Group of the Riigikogu Valdo Randpere also took part in the meeting. The Vice-President of the Riigikogu Jüri Ratas, the Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Riigikogu Marko Mihkelson, the Chairman of the Rural Affairs Committee of the Riigikogu Kalvi Kõva, the Chairman of the Environment Committee of the Riigikogu Rainer Vakra, the Chairman of the Constitutional Committee of the Riigikogu Rait Maruste and members of the Riigikogu Remo Holsmer, Barbi Pilvre and Kadri Simson will also meet with the Speaker of the Swedish parliament on Tuesday and on Wednesday.

On Tuesday morning, Urban Ahlin met with President Toomas Hendrik Ilves, and he will also have meetings with Prime Minister Taavi Rõivas and the Minister of Defence Sven Mikser. The Defence Forces will show the Swedish Speaker around in Ämari Air Base.

After assuming office last spring, Eiki Nestor made his first official visit to Sweden.

Dutch End Patriot Mission in Turkey: Spain Joins the Mission

2015-02-10  In its first deployment outside of Spain, Spanish air defense forces deploy to Turkey.

Spanish troops joined NATO’s Patriot anti-ballistic missile deployment in Adana, Turkey on Monday (26 January 2015), replacing a Dutch unit which had been stationed there since January 2013.

For the past two years,  NATO’s Patriot deployment on Turkey’s south-eastern border has reinforced Turkey’s air defenses against the threat posed by Syria’s ballistic missiles. NATO Foreign Ministers approved the mission in December 2012, after a request from Turkey. At that time, Germany, the Netherlands and the United States each deployed two Patriot missile batteries and soldiers to operate them.

The Spanish unit is now operational and protecting the south-eastern city of Adana.

The German and American batteries, which are stationed in Kahramanmaras and Gaziantep respectively, also remain in place. NATO continues to follow the ongoing crisis in Syria with grave concern. Over the past two years, NATO has detected hundreds of Syrian short-range missile launches.  The Alliance remains fully committed to the defense of Turkey.

http://www.nato.int/cps/en/natohq/news_116890.htm

According to a story in Zaman published January 7, 2015:

The Netherlands, Germany and the United States had each sent two Patriot missile batteries and soldiers to operate them in early 2013, after Turkey, a NATO ally, called for aid to defend itself against attacks from Syria on its southern border. Approximately 400 German troops are operating the Patriots in Kahramanmaraş, a province some 100 kilometers north of the border with Syria.

The Netherlands announced in August that it will withdraw its Patriot missile batteries and the Dutch soldiers operating them in Adana province at the end of January.

Spain decided to replace the Netherlands’ contribution to the deployment, and 145 Spanish troops and a new battery are en route to İskenderun, Spanish newspaper El Pais reported this week. The new Patriot battery is expected to be operating by the end of this month.

The video below shows a ceremony officially ending the Dutch engagement in the Patriot mission in defense of Turkey.

Canadian Tanker Joins the Anti-ISIL Operation

02/09/2015

2015-02-09 In the video below, a CC-150 Polaris is seen refueling two CF-18 Hornets during a night mission over Iraq on 21 January 2015 during Operation Impact. Canadian Air Force (RCAF).

Video released February 3, 2015.

According to a Canadian Air Force description of the CC-150:

The CC-150 Polaris (Airbus A-310) is a multi-purpose, twin-engine, long-range jet aircraft that can be converted for passenger, freight or medical transport and air-to-air refueling (or any combination of these configurations).

The Polaris can reach a speed of up to Mach 0.84 (1029 km/h) carrying a load of up to 32,000 kilograms (70,560 pounds). Passenger loads range from 28 to 194 people, depending on the particular aircraft tail number and configuration.

The five Canadian Forces CC-150 Polaris aircraft are stationed at 8 Wing Trenton, Ontario. During its years in service, the Polaris fleet has transported vast amounts of supplies to Canadian Armed Forces personnel deployed on operational missions all over the globe.

In October 2005, two Polaris carried the advance party and main body of the Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART) to Pakistan to conduct a humanitarian operation in the aftermath of a devastating earthquake. In 2014, the CC-150 transported Canadian soldiers to eastern and central Europe as part of Canada’s contribution to North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s (NATO) reassurance measures towards Op Reassurance.

The CC-150 Polaris (Airbus A-310) long-range transport aircraft was in service with the Canadian Armed Forces in southwest Asia in 2001, when a Polaris deployed with about 40 personnel to the Persian Gulf region on Operation APOLLO. The Strategic Airlift Detachment moved approximately 3.5 million kilograms (about 7.72 million pounds) of cargo and more than 2,300 passengers during Op APOLLO.

During Operation ATHENA, the CC-150 Polaris fleet operated between Canada and Afghanistan in support of Joint Task Force Afghanistan moving men, women and material over thousands of kilometres.

As part of the Air Force Multi-Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) program, two CC-150 Polaris aircraft have been converted to strategic air-to-air refuellers for Canada’s fleet of CF-18 Hornet fighter aircraft. The Polaris MRTT is capable of transferring 36,000 kilograms (79,380 pounds) of fuel to receiving aircraft over a journey of 4,630 kilometres (2,875 statute miles).

Consequently, one Polaris tanker can ferry a flight of four CF-18 Hornets non-stop across the Atlantic Ocean. When configured for VIP passengers, the CC-150 Polaris is used to transport high-ranking government officials and foreign dignitaries, including the Prime Minister, the Governor General and members of the Royal Family across Canada and around the world.

Jordanian Airstrike against ISIL Storage and Staging facility in Syria

2015-02-09 The strikes were conducted as part of Operation Inherent Resolve, the operation to eliminate the ISIL terrorist group and the threat they pose to Iraq, Syria, the region, and the wider international community.

The destruction of ISIL targets in Syria and Iraq further limits the terrorist group’s ability to project terror and conduct operations.

Coalition nations which have conducted airstrikes in Iraq include the U.S., Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Netherlands, and the United Kingdom.

Coalition nations which have conducted airstrikes in Syria include the U.S., Bahrain, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.

U.S. Central Command Public Affairs

2/6/15

This airstrike has been identified as delivered by the Jordanian Air Force.

In a story published by Aljazeera on February 8, 2015:

Jordan has conducted 56 raids in three days of air strikes targeting a stronghold of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) group, the country’s air force commander has said.

The country launched the bombing raids on the Syrian city of Raqqa, an ISIL stronghold, on Thursday after ISIL released video showing the killing of a Jordanian pilot held hostage by the group.

“We achieved what we aimed at. We destroyed logistics centres, arms depots and targeted hideouts of their fighters,” General Mansour al-Jbour, the head of the Jordanian airf orce, said on Sunday.

Jbour said that 20 percent of the total sorties against the armed group made by the US-led coalition had been conducted by Jordan.

The sorties have led to the “degrading” of nearly 20 percent of the group’s capabilities, he said.

“We are determined to wipe them from the face of the Earth.”

ISIL recently released a video showing them burning the Jordanian pilot, Moaz al-Kassasbeh, to death while he was trapped in a cage.

In comments published on Saturday, Hussein al-Majali, Jordan’s interior minister, told the state-run al-Rai newspaper that his country would go after ISIL fighters “wherever they are”.

And the King of Jordan quoted Clint Eastwood in declaring his intentions versus ISIS after the burning of the Jordanian pilot.

Members of the House Armed Services Committee met with Jordan’s King Abdullah Tuesday not long after news broke that ISIS had burned to death a Jordanian pilot captured in the fight against the terrorist group.

In a private session with lawmakers, the king showed an extraordinary measure of anger — anger which he expressed by citing American movie icon Clint Eastwood.

“He said there is going to be retribution like ISIS hasn’t seen,” said Republican Rep. Duncan Hunter Jr., a Marine Corps veteran of two tours in Iraq and one in Afghanistan, who was in the meeting with the king.

“He mentioned ‘Unforgiven’ and he mentioned Clint Eastwood, and he actually quoted a part of the movie.”

Hunter would not say which part of “Unforgiven” the king quoted, but noted it was where Eastwood’s character describes how he is going to deliver his retribution.

“He’s angry,” Hunter said of the king.

“They’re starting more sorties tomorrow than they’ve ever had. They’re starting tomorrow.

And he said, ‘The only problem we’re going to have is running out of fuel and bullets.’

The following is the unofficial translation of the statement issued by the Jordan Armed Forces-Arab Army (JAF) mourning pilot Muath Kasasbeh, who was killed by the so-called Islamic State:

‘“Among the Believers are men who have been true to their covenant with Allah. Of them some have completed their vow to the extreme, and some still wait: but they have never changed [their determination] in the least.’

Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) says: ‘The most honorable death is to fall a martyr.’

Praise to Allah, who is the only immortal, whilst He has appointed a term for each of His creatures: When their term is reached, not an hour can they cause delay, nor (an hour) can they advance.

Since the first moment 1st Lt. Muath Kasasbeh fell captive to the cowardly terrorist organization, JAF, supported by various state agencies, has exerted relentless efforts to free him from the forces of evil and darkness.

But this criminal gang insisted to put a tragic end to his life, an end condemned by all religions. JAF announces the assassination of our brave pilot on January 3, 2015 — one month ago — to be chosen by Allah as a martyr in heaven.

As JAF announces the martyrdom of the brave pilot, Muath Kasasbeh, pray to Allah to accept him in the company of those on whom is the grace of Allah — the prophets, the sincere lovers of truth, the martyrs and the righteous.

As JAF mourns the brave pilot, it asserts that his spilled blood will be avenged and the punishment that will be inflicted on the tyrants of Earth who assassinated Muath will be proportionate to the magnitude of the tragedy of all Jordanians.

And soon will the unjust assailants know what vicissitudes their affairs will take.”

First Flight of KC-390: Embraer Enters the Airlift Market

2015-02-09 by defenceWeb

Embraer on February 3 performed the first flight of its new KC-390 military transport. Test pilots Mozart Louzada and Marcos Salgado de Oliveira Lima and flight test engineers Raphael Lima and Roberto Becker flew the aircraft for 1 hour and 25 minutes, evaluating flying qualities and performance.

“This first flight is a fundamental step toward accomplishing the task with which we were entrusted. The KC-390 is the result of a close cooperation with the Brazilian Air Force and international partners, representing what is most likely the greatest technological challenge that the Company has ever encountered in its history. We are profoundly moved for having achieved this key milestone”, said Frederico Fleury Curado, President and CEO of Embraer.

“The program continues to move forward as planned and the KC-390 has drawn interest from several countries around the world”, said Jackson Schneider, President and CEO of Embraer Defence & Security. “We are proud to once again keep our commitments in the development of this aircraft, which will set a new standard in the category of tactical military transport.”

“The KC-390 will be the backbone of transport aviation for the Brazilian Air Force. From the Amazon to Antarctica, the fleet of 28 aircraft will play a key role in the diversity of projects of the Brazilian State, from scientific research to the maintenance of sovereignty”, said Aeronautics Commander, Lieutenant-Brigadier General Nivaldo Luiz Rossato.

On its maiden flight, the KC-390 crew performed maneuvers to evaluate its flight characteristics and conducted a variety of systems tests, having benefited from an advanced campaign of simulations and extensive ground tests. “The KC-390 behaved in a docile and predictable manner,” said Captain Louzada.”The advanced fly-by-wire flight control system and the latest-generation avionics make flying easy and render a smooth and precise flight.”

On May 20, 2014, Embraer and the Brazilian Air Force signed the serial production contract for the delivery of 28 KC-390 aircraft and initial logistic support. Besides the order from the Brazilian Air Force, there are current purchase intentions from other countries, for a total of 32 additional aircraft.

Brazil’s defence ministry has invested heavily in the KC-390 program, covering $2 billion in development costs and signing a 7.2 billion reals ($2.7 billion) order for 28 aircraft last year.

But a tight federal budget led the defense ministry to push payment on some projects from late last year into 2015, leading Embraer to warn of negative 2014 cash flow.

“We expect that should be resolved in the first months of the year, especially regarding the KC-390, but that didn’t affect the timeline of the project,” Schneider said.

Argentina, Colombia, Chile, Portugal and the Czech Republic have together expressed interest in 32 of the new cargo jets.

Over the next 15 years, Embraer sees a market for more than 700 planes worth over $50 billion in the segment, as countries look to replace older versions of Lockheed Martin Corp’s famous Hercules airlifter.
