Joint Warrior 151 in Scotland

05/01/2015: Joint Warrior is a UK tri-Service multinational exercise that involves numerous warships, aircraft, marines and troops. Joint Warrior provides a complex environment in which UK, NATO and allied units can go through training together in tactics and skills for use in a combined joint task force.

The exercise runs through a range of scenarios, including crisis and conflict situations, that could be realistically encountered in operations – disputed territory, terrorist activity, piracy and more. This massive multinational exercise delivers specialist maritime training, bringing together the theatres of air, surface, underwater and amphibious forces.

Utah Air National Guard Refuels NATO Allies

04/30/2015

04/30/2015:The Utah National Guard travels to Germany to help keep NATO Surveillance Aircraft in the Air. A typical AWACS operational mission last 10 hours, but there is a need for air refueling to takeoff, operate over the objective area, and land safely.

Three aircrews and 19 maintenance personnel from the Utah Air National Guard’s 151st Air Refueling Wing spent two weeks at NATO Air Base Geilenkirchen, Germany, providing much-needed air refueling support during training flights for NATO E-3A pilots Jan. 4-16, 2015.

Simulated Air Attack on Spanish Warship

04/30/2015: In this phase of Exercise JOINT WARRIOR, a simulated air attack against Spanish warship Mendez Nuñez off the coast of Scotland is highlighted.

This is one tactical exercise among many within Exercise JOINT WARRIOR, which ran from April 11-24 off the coast of Scotland.

NATO’s three standing naval forces (SNFs) consisting of 14 ships joined more than 40 additional warships and submarines and 70 aircraft.

In total, around 13,000 personnel from 14 countries are participating in the exercise.

The exercise provides complex coordinated training, increasing interoperability between Allied forces and providing valuable experience integrating land, air, and maritime forces.

One might note that the Spanish are performing the Baltic air patrol in their Typhoons and engaging in face to face air dynamics with the Russians on a regular basis as well.

Bush and Theodore Roosevelt Ammo Transfer

04/29/2015

04/29/2015: MH-60S Sea Hawk helicopters are used to transfer ordnance off the flight deck of the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77) to USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) while underway in the Atlantic Ocean.

The MH-60R Seahawk missions are Anti-Submarine Warfare, Anti-Surface Warfare, Surveillance, Communications Relay, Combat Search and Rescue, Naval Gunfire Support and logistics support.

As the Navy’s next generation submarine hunter and anti-surface warfare helicopter, the MH-60R Seahawk will be the cornerstone of the Navy’s Helicopter Concept of Operations. Anti-Submarine Warfare and Surface Warfare are the MH-60R’s primary missions. Secondary missions include Search and Rescue, Vertical Replenishment, Naval Surface Fire Support, logistics support, personnel transport, Medical Evacuation, and VHF/UHF/Link Communication Relay. The MH-60R and its mission systems will replace the fleet’s legacy SH-60B and SH-60F aircraft.

The MH-60S Seahawk missions are Anti-Surface Warfare, combat support, humanitarian disaster relief, Combat Search and Rescue, aero medical evacuation, SPECWAR and organic Airborne Mine Countermeasures.

The MH-60S replaced the aging fleet of H-46D helicopters, which led to significant reductions in costs per flight hour, mission aborts, component removals, and unscheduled maintenance actions. The MH-60S with its glass cockpit incorporates active matrix liquid crystal displays, used to facilitate pilot and co-pilot vertical and horizontal situation presentations.

Another major design of the MH-60S is a “common cockpit,” which is shared with the new MH-60R. This will allow a pilot to shift from one aircraft to another with minimal re-training.
